Minnesota Celebrates National Teach Ag Day on September 18

Statewide campaign highlights the impact of agricultural educators and encourages the next generation of teachers

Minnesota is joining the nationwide celebration of National Teach Ag Day on Thursday, September 18, 2025, recognizing the critical role of agricultural education and the dedicated teachers who make it possible.

While National Teach Ag Day is celebrated across the country with classroom activities and events, Minnesota is focusing on one simple but powerful message: agricultural education changes lives and Minnesota needs more passionate teachers.

“Agricultural educators are pivotal in shaping the next generation, equipping students for successful careers in agriculture, food and natural resources while also cultivating their potential as community leaders,” said Sarah Dornink, Executive Director of the Minnesota Agricultural Education Leadership Council (MAELC). “Teach Ag Day serves to recognize their significant contributions and inspire more individuals to enter this fulfilling profession.”

Across Minnesota, agriculture teachers guide thousands of students each year through hands-on learning in agriculture, food, and natural resources. These programs not only prepare students for careers but also develop leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills that last a lifetime.

Minnesota, like much of the country, is experiencing a shortage of qualified agricultural educators. National Teach Ag Day is a reminder of the opportunity and the need for more students to consider careers in agricultural education.

“What I enjoy most is seeing students succeed not only in high school, but also beyond,” said Shawn Linder, agricultural educator at Grand Rapids High School.

“What excites me about teaching agriculture is the opportunity it offers, not only the opportunities for growth, but also the chance to play a role in teaching the next generation,” said Elijah Doyamo, senior at University of Minnesota - Twin Cities and a 2025 Minnesota Agricultural Education Intern.

To mark the day, Minnesota Teach Ag will share teacher stories and highlights on its Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn pages. Agriculture teachers are encouraged to celebrate by posting a group photo with their students. Minnesotans can join in by thanking an ag teacher, sharing a photo, or reflecting on how agricultural education has made a difference in their lives.

“We want students to see that being an agricultural educator is not just a job, it is a career that changes lives and has a positive impact on local communities,” said Kari Schwab, Program Director with MAELC. “The need is great, and the future of agriculture, food and natural resource education depends on passionate leaders in the classroom.”
